It's amazing how a holiday can change your perspective.

I hope that you all had a great summer and found time to reconnect with your family members and friends.  In writing this blog entry, I am reflecting on the personal strength and energy that having a genuine five-week break from work has given me, and for that matter, my family.

After a break that included a barge trip on the Canal du Midi in France, a week with friends in Crete, a visit to family in Australia and a few days in Hong Kong - I was left thinking about how much my life had changed over the last ten years, and in particular since starting to work in Shirlaws in 2000. To put this into some sort of context, I have had more time off with my family this year alone compared to the fifteen years prior to joining Shirlaws!  Getting a better sense of Balance in my lifestyle was one of the five motivating factors for joining Shirlaws in the first place. The others were, in no particular order:

  • To align my personal vision of supporting change in people's lives with a business that was committed to doing the same - via business coaching at a B2B level;
  • To continue a journey of self discovery; to challenge myself and to understand myself better;
  • To build another business, Shirlaws needed (and still needs) business builders - I was committed to having equity in Shirlaws and very motivated to continue to build the equity value of the company; and
  • To be a part of a business that allowed me to work closely with those people that I call my friends.

After seven years with this business I can say that I have not only achieved what I set out to do - I have absolutely blown those expectations out of the water!

I used the holiday time to reflect on the year past in both a commercial space and also a personal space to work through what I should set for my personal context and business goals for the next year.  More about that tomorrow.
