After every Shirlaws conference, attendees - in this case 57 coaches from Australia and New Zealand - have a chance to share their 'Key Learnings'. Last week we convened on Queensland's Gold Coast, and MC Richard Erickson proposed something different - and interactive blog post where we could not only share our key learnings but also, over time, practical application of those lessons in our own businesses and those of our clients and partners.

The Context of the Sanctuary Cove conference was 'Positioning', so I expect many of the lessons will relate to focus and revenue generation. To contribute yours, please leave a comment below, and I also recommend reading previous comments to further your personal learning. I particularly invite those coaches who attended to see this as an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of being a Shirlaws coach to the wider audience who will find this page through links or searches.

Allow me to kick things off:

I realised a nice dinstinction between executive coaching, which is largely one-on-one, and business coaching, which requires the coach or team of coaches to manage the greater dynamics of a client's team. This will allow me to articulate clearer expectations to my clients, particularly those who experience rapid changes through executive coaching but are then frustrated by the slower pace of a team-based project.

What did you learn or apply?

Re-positioning was the perfect conference context. I reslised that what makes for a long term relationship with a client is to be constantly changing your role to suit the level you're at. From our perspective, I was energised by the new positioning of CD, Andrew and a raft of new faces contributing - especially David Fudge - the velvet voice and the velvet sledgehammer - what a pair!

My biggest learning was to understand the 'buyers journey' from a lead to a client. It gave me more awareness of the client's context at each stage - eg from being unaware of our existence; to positioning us in the market; to identifying their problems/needs; to finally engaging us. It was also helpful to share that journey with other Shirlaws coaches.

I learnt that, through working together as a team, using each others strengths, we can give our clients huge benefits from that amazing knowledge and experience.
