As somebody who sends his colleagues online each Friday, I have been watching recent internet warnings closely. If you haven't already (or haven't heard that you need to), please download and install the Internet Explorer patch here. I can also recommend installing Firefox as an alternative with street cred.
Since this is my last newsletter for 2009, and coming at a time when many of you will have more time for strategic reading, I thought I would share some key websites this week, rather than just individual links. In addition to my personal preoccupation with Urban Legends and US Politics, these are the regular sites I visit to find the links I share with you.
In return, I'd like you to share some good news stories about your business. I'm planning a new year blog post about the positive business news that's happening, and I'd like to know: What went really well for you in 2008? And what are you looking forward to next year?
Merry Christmas from the Shirlaws Team!
In my humble opinion, a leading website for articles on Leadership, Business Strategy, and Focusing your Energy for success. I also hear one of their bloggers is quite attractive. It's worth noting that these newsletters are put online, should you ever wish to refer somebody to them or start a discussion.
I've flagged this site before, in my examination of The Pond Theory of Social Networks. I'm pleased to report that this social bookmarking site continues to provide links to interesting and informative stories, with an IT Start-up bent, as well as engaging discussion on a range of topics.
Written by Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, this provides blogs posts on a range of topics across business, the power of visualisation and hypnosis, and Scott's desire to win a Nobel Prize for Economics.
From 37 Signals, who have a positive though sometime controversial reputation in the internet business community, this blog will provide you with powerful insights on business and design, as well as the odd video or screenshot to make a point.
Closer to home, I also like to check-in on the thoughts of two Queensland bloggers I admire - Peter Black's Freedom to Differ and Des Walsh's Thinking Home Business.
Intranet Joke of the Week
A not-too-bright guy gets up really early in the morning to go ice fishing. He goes out onto the ice with his tent, his pick and his fishing rod, and starts to pick at the ice.
Then he hears a big booming voice: "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."
The guy looks around and then starts to pick at the ice again.
He hears the voice again: "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."
Now the guy is getting a little edgy. He looks up toward the sky and yells, "God, is that you?"
And the voice answers, "No. This is the Manager of the Ice Rink."
Until next year,
Jacob Aldridge and the Shirlaws Team
