Do you make good decisions?
It's not the easiest question to answer, largely because what constitutes "a good decision" can vary. Was it timely? Was it properly thought out, or based on knowledgeable instinct? Was it well communicated?
My most important measure asks how productive was the result of your decision? Whether it's buying lunch or business planning for 2010, did it deliver the outcomes you wanted in the timeframe you desired?
Measuring productivity holds you accountable to your decisions. And that, in turn, allows you to learn from successes and mistakes, so you make better decisions in the future.
Being Decisive
More than just "an essential aspect of manliness", decisiveness (when appropriate) is important for all of us. The alternative is restlessness and uncertainty.
Get out of my Building
Do you decide what your client wants? How do you know what they want, unless you organise regular client reviews?
Who Names Famous Paintings?
Leonardo never named it the Mona Lisa, so who makes that decision? (Hint - this also answers that famous university question "What does an art historian actually do?")
Attractive to Mosquitoes
It's that time of year again - so why do mozzies decide to hone in on you at the summer barbecue, and leave me alone?
Intranet Joke of the Week
A mother, her son weeks away from finishing high school, is talking to a friend who politely asks "Has your son decided what he wants to with his life?"
"Yes," the mother replies. "He wants to be a garbage collector."
To which her friend replies "Isn't that's a little strange, you know, as a career ambition?"
"Sure is," says the mum. "I think he's of the opinion that they only work on Tuesdays."
Until next week,
